The Complex – Salt Lake City, UT
December 13, 2025
This time of year, with the cold weather and holiday seasons fast approaching, there are not a whole lot of concerts being put on. When there is a show, it ends up being a reminder and a little taste of when shows are in their prime season and on December 13th, The Complex hosted a 20th anniversary show for a band based out of Clearfield, Utah called The Brobecks to remind us just how great it is to see music played live. This was an exciting show, as it is the former band of Dallon Weekes, frontman of the band I Don’t Know How But They Found Me. For anyone that is a fan of IDK How, it’s likely that they are also a fan of The Brobecks, as this band seems to be the root of Dallon Weekes’ wild career. The night was an exciting celebration, not only of the two decades since the formation of this amazing band, but also of Utah based musicians as a whole.

Starting off the night was a band called Future Ex Boyfriend, based out of Salt Lake City, Utah. This band has a sound that is unlike anything being produced in the Utah music scene. It has a dreamy sort of psychedelic effect when listening, and the way they perform live has a way of putting you in a trance. The vibes coming from the stage were so groovy as they played through their set. Making it through the first three songs, the crowd was hooked. They even played a little snippet of “Nobody Likes the Opening Band,” which is a song by IDK How.

Nearing the end of their 11 song setlist, Future Ex Boyfriend was putting on a phenomenal performance. Closing out, they announced that they will be releasing a new album soon, and that they had brought clothes from their personal wardrobe to sell as merch. Having seen them perform once before, I personally will not be missing another Future Ex Boyfriend show. With how comfortable they were with the crowd, it seems like they need a headlining show of their own at The Complex, and I can’t wait to see what they release in the future.

Formed in Clearfield, Utah, The Brobecks is an alternative-indie band that brings dramatic lyricism to a very early 2000’s indie-alt sound. With this being Dallon Weekes’ first major band, right before joining Panic! At The Disco in 2009, The Brobecks is a fantastic look at the artistic skills of what would become I Don’t Know How But They Found Me. This being the 20th anniversary show of their album “Happiest Nuclear Winter,” the setlist consisted of the entire album front to back. Starting it off with the opening track, “C’mon Vietnam,” the sounds coming from the stage were electrifying. After that, they went into their song “Better Than Me,” to which the crowd exploded and sang every word back to the stage.

Throughout the night, there were so many amazing moments that this band produced on stage. About halfway through the album, Dallon would go on to introduce the next song as the “lowest streaming and least popular song he refuses to stop playing.” This song is called “A Letter,” and it required some crowd participation. The fans were split into two different groups to harmonize with each other, and after a couple of practice rounds, Dallon Weekes had The Complex crowd sounding like the Tabernacle Choir during this song.
Plowing through the rest of the album, the show was a gift that just kept on giving. At one point, the band did a cover of “What’s Up?” by 4 Non Blondes. Finally reaching the end of the album, The Brobecks left the stage to the crowd wanting more. With demands of an encore, they took the stage once more to play two more songs: “Love At First Sight,” and “Goodnight Socialite,” a song they claim to have always ended their sets with back in the day. The entire show was so special, and a fantastic celebration of a band that created so many amazing songs two decades ago. Hopefully we get to see another reunion show for their album “Violent Things” here in the next few years.
