For 20 years, The Velour has been a beacon for bands in Utah County. Starting on January 22nd through the 24th, Velour celebrated its 20th anniversary with a concert series that brought on a ton of Velour alumni such as Eyes Lips Eyes, The Moth and the Flame, and of course, Sego. With night two of the series being sold out, we were in for a crazy night of local legends playing on the Provo stage.

Starting off the night was a very unique performance from Utah’s own, Joe Castor. With an acoustic guitar, a loop pedal, and a hauntingly beautiful voice, Joe created such a stunning atmosphere with the sounds that he produced. Using techniques like singing into his guitar, the vocals gained a sort of symphonic alteration that lingered in your head as he played on. With this being the start of the night, I was very excited for what was to come later on in the night.

Next up for the night was Chasing Kings. This Los Angeles-based band originally opened for Imagine Dragons when they played at the Velour, and has members that have been a part of other bands such as Cold War Kids and Awolnation. They’re sound had a very cinematic vibe to it that could be compared to Phil Collin’s sound. Though they only have one album out on streaming as a band, they had their live show fine tuned and played a killer show. They had the crowd dancing and grooving, getting them warmed up for the next bands to come.

Third on the lineup for the night was another band originally from Utah called The New Electric Sound. This alternative sounding rock band had such a fun set. This was the point of the night where the crowd was finally starting to get into the live music and bounce with the sounds on stage. The New Electric Sound played their role perfectly in getting the crowd to that level. It was one of those bands that just looked like they were having fun on stage, so you couldn’t help but have fun yourself. With that classic alternative/pop rock sound, that is comparable to the sound of Neon Trees, the band was a very orthodox ingredient to making the night as high energy as possible, and a key ingredient in the formula that makes the Velour home to some of the most legendary bands ever.

Ending the night, Sego would take the stage at nearly 11 o’clock at night. Though the show had a very late runtime, that did not keep the fans from going absolutely bananas when Sego started playing. From the second that the band started playing, there was a raging mosh pit for the entirety of the set. Sego brought the heat with their music, with sounds that stem from classic Utah indie rock vibes, to elements of alternative club music. It felt like I fell on a rainbow of different genres of music that I didn’t even know existed.

As far as Velour shows go,Sego takes the cake for one of my favorite shows that I have seen at this venue. They brought a dramatic flair to their performance that made me feel like I was seeing them play on a stage that was 5 times bigger than the one they were on at Velour. There wasn’t a single body in the room that wasn’t moving, and you couldn’t help but join in on the jumping and moshing going on throughout this set. With the release of their new singles “Buy It Break It” and a cover of XXXTENTACION’s song “SAD,” I cannot wait for the next Sego album, and am equally restless for the next Sego show.
